5 steps to success, according to AccorHotel’s Angela Cowley

Angela Cowley is the Director of Communications for Accor Hotels, Pacific, and we were lucky enough to snag an exclusive chat with her.

So what do you ask someone like Cowley? Well, the five biggest things she’s learned being in the travel industry, of course!

From going beyond your usual comfort zone to getting your work/life balance right, Cowley has some fab tidbits of advice for us all.

GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

I have been lucky enough to be presented with some amazing opportunities in my career and some of it has simply come down to being in the right place and the right time.

The biggest opportunities however, haven’t come without a degree of angst and the thought, ‘Can I really do this?’ I took on the director of communications role for Accor Hotels as a maternity cover for Ginni Post in May 2017.

I had been at AccorHotels for five and a half years (two babies in between) and knew I could do the job but wasn’t sure I had the confidence to do it.

By taking a leap and trusting myself and my ability, I have learned how much I can achieve. I’m proud of giving myself a push when fear could have gotten the better of me.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GOOD, CLEVER PEOPLE

Working with people who you admire and respect not only makes you feel good, but it can shape the way you think.

Sitting in meetings with the leadership team led by Simon McGrath, our COO, and watching the way they operate has been inspiring and helped me see things from different angles.

EMBRACE FEEDBACK

Good or bad, I want to hear it. Whether it’s from a friend, colleague or manager, there’s no better way to learn.

While the nice feedback is always lovely to hear, I would prefer to know when I could be doing something better.

KEEP COMPOSED

Working in a small team and having a huge workload with a tonne of balls in the air can at times be overwhelming. Having a coffee shop next door for those times when you just need to step outside is a godsend.

GET THE BALANCE RIGHT

Juggling family life with a demanding 24/7 job has its challenges but if you really love what you do you can make it work.

Know when you need to switch off and make time for the ones you love.
