Four Points by Sheraton Sydney, Darling Harbour has secured $200 million funding to expand the hotel with an additional 4,800 sq meters of convention, meeting and event spaces by May 2016.

The project will see a third tower added to the hotel, which will also be the first in Sydney to offer two pillarless ballrooms, which compliments the largest pillarless ballroom in its sister-five star property, The Westin.

The ballrooms together offer seating space of up to 1100 theatre-style and include breakout and meeting room, dedicated pre-function areas and the latest technology.

The hotel expects the 23 new spaces to be operational by May 2016, nine months ahead of the International Convention Centre Sydney.

“Sydney needs more space,” Four Points by Sheraton general manager, David Fraser said, speaking at AIME today.

“The additional convention space will also help address the reduction of event facilities in the CBD area during the remake of Sydney’s Convention & Exhibition Centre, ensuring Sydney remains number one for large scale events in the Asia Pacific region.”

However, Fraser said while they expect a strong reception to the new spaces, it does not compete with the ICC in the same league as it will “specialise in small to medium sized conventions”.

The new facilities will coincide with an additional 222 hotel rooms, bringing its total rooms offered to 905, as well as a new bar and various other restaurant concepts.
