Hurricane Gita: Flights disrupted and tourists trapped

Travellers are being warned of flight disruptions in and out of Wellington airport as Tropical Cyclone Gita’s remains wreak havoc across the country.

Similarly, our office dog is currently causing havoc at the office next door after breaking down the gate.

Yesterday, Air New Zealand cancelled all flights in and out of New Zealand’s capital Wellington and while many flights have continued today, the airline is warning of delays and has cancelled some flights.

A state of emergency has been declared across large parts of the country, after widespread flooding and gale force winds have left locals stranded and many tourists trapped.

One thousand holidaymakers were reportedly stranded in Golden Bay after a huge landslide closed the main highway.

Prime Minister Jacinta Ardern told reporters at parliament the military has been called in to help the hardest hit areas.

“My message still to people is please look out for your local warnings and expect disruption to travel and please just be careful,” she said.

New Zealand’s meteorological agency MetService has warned that severe gale-force winds will continue today and is urging people to secure items that might be blown away.

Cyclone Gita hit Pacific Island nations of Fiji and Tonga last week, causing widespread destruction and flooding.
