Marriott Autograph property Pier One Sydney Harbour will complete a five-year transformation journey in 2019 with a $10 million investment for a design refurb of all rooms and suites.

The hotel accommodation will receive a complete design refresh from acclaimed heritage architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, including the top suites offering views floating above the Sydney Harbour.

Commencing this month, the refurbishment will be completed by September with minimum disruption to in-house guests and hotel inventory.

Kim Mahaffy, general manager of Pier One Sydney Harbour, said: “The design transformation of our rooms marks the final piece of the puzzle for an exciting journey for the hotel.

“We are now one of Sydney’s pre-eminent lifestyle hotels, with a luxurious, yet accessible offering for guests looking for a distinctively Sydney experience right on Sydney Harbour.

“By working with a design firm that is renowned for their heritage renovations, we hope to bring this to life for our guests, with a focus on sourcing Australian and locally-made materials and furniture.”

Tim Greer, principal at Tonkin Zulaika Greer, said: “We want to connect the harbour visually and aesthetically to the interiors of the hotel through our use of materials, tones and colours with a nod to Sydney’s rich maritime architecture throughout.

“Rooms will be seamlessly connected with the stunning architecture already seen throughout the hotel.”

Marriott International took over Pier One Sydney Harbour in February 2014 and undertook a series of major renovations of the central facilities including entry lobby, bar, restaurant and conferencing facilities that same year with the help of Bates Smart Architects.

The Gantry Restaurant opened in early 2015, and in 2016 the hotel launched The Kerrigan, a harbourside pop-up smoke house providing Australian BBQ style fare in a casual waterside setting.

In 2017, Pier One Sydney Harbour launched a series of activations to connect the hotel with unique Sydney experiences for guests and visitors, including Igloos on the Pier over winter; The Pool by Pier One, a harbourside pool over summer; and The Retreat by Pier One, celebrating wellness and mindfulness over February and March.
