Barangaroo development vital for Sydney: Accor

Accor has welcomed the development of the six star casino and hotel complex at Barangaroo as vital to Sydney’s competitiveness in the Asia Pacific market.

The NSW government last week granted the first approvals for James Packer's 70-storey development proposal, with Premier Barry O’Farrell indicating that Packer would not have to worry about a tender.

Describing the development as a "vital" step to maintain Sydney's competitive edge, Accor chief operating officer Simon McGrath welcomed the flow on benefits for Australia's economy.

“After a decade of inactivity, Barry O’Farrell’s government has shown that tourism is a priority for the city by providing the opportunity for major developments,” he said.

This development combined with the Sydney Exhibition and Convention Centre redevelopment will allow Sydney to counter the advances of major cities in Asia as well as Australian state capitals, he said.

“There is no doubt that Sydney failed to make the most of the Sydney Olympics and let its tourism infrastructure run down, just at a time when cities such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Melbourne were ramping it up,” McGrath said.

While the proposal has come under scrutiny for promoting gambling, McGrath conceded that the development was warranted.

“Anyone who has been to Singapore and Macau will have been able to see the impact of such developments on the tourism market. It is not just about gaming, it’s about creating facilities that tourists want,” McGrath said.

The six star hotel and casino complex is predicted to give the state government $114 million a year in gaming tax revenue.
