Business Events Week to return in 2014
By admin

Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) has confirmed that Business Events Week will return in 2014 following its successful debut earlier this year, with chief scientist for Australia Professor Ian Chubb appointed as its official ambassador.

The program of activities will be held from February 17 to 21 with the Asia-Pacific Incentives & Meeting Expo (AIME) as its "centrepiece". It will once again seek to illustrate the value of business events to Australia’s economy, knowledge base and tourism industry.

"Conferences span the entire business and knowledge sectors, providing a major platform to collaborate, innovate and educate," MCB chief executive Karen Bolinger said.

"The scientific community in particular is a major beneficiary of the legacies produced by conferences and who better to convey the significance of this than our chief scientist.”

Bolinger underlined the value of the business events sector to the Australian economy, forecast to rise to $31 billion by 2020, along its flow-on effects for small to medium businesses.

“In Victoria alone, between 2009 to 2013 delegate spend during MCB-secured business events is estimated at $100 million on hotels, $46 million on air travel, $23 million on sightseeing and tours, and $50 million on retail.

"The significance of business events to the nation, and the jobs they provide, presents a strong argument for the ongoing investment into the industry."

Meanwhile, Professor Chubb highlighted the benefits that business events offer Australia’s “research and knowledge sectors”.

The annual Associations Forum CEO Symposium will also feature in the program, along with the return of Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre's Open House which aims to showcase innovation in the business events space through addresses from high profile speakers.
