Competition heats up for Glebe Island Expo

The Exhibition and Event Association of Australasia (EEAA) expects a wave of development proposals for Glebe Island Expo to flow through over the coming weeks as the closing date approaches on November 13.

Requests for proposals (RFPs) are now being welcomed for the development, which comes as the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre (SCEC) closes its doors from 2013 to 2016.

The interim facility, covering 15,000 square metres, will provide sufficient capacity for large exhibitions during the SCEC closure.

Speaking with The Nibbler last week, EEAA general manager Joyce DiMascio welcomed the development as the “ideal outcome” for Sydney during the SCEC closure.

With just over a month until the tender deadline, DiMascio is expecting a “strong response” from developers.

She also expects a number of new strategic partnerships will emerge as organisations join forces to construct the interim facility.

“There will be a lot of competition to deliver the facilities; from independent developers and new partner organisations who have joined to design, build, operate and deconstruct the facility in 2016," she said. "This is a significant operation and there will no doubt be many operators keen to win the bid."

With the development to play a critical role in Sydney's events industry, EEAA has vowed to work closely with the consortia winner.

“We will continue our targeted campaign with the winner and will continue to be very active in this space,” DiMascio promised.

Business Events Sydney will manage all booking inquiries for the new Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct until the end of the year and Glebe Island Expo until May 2013. The operators of Glebe Island will be appointed in March next year.
