EEAA takes Victoria warning to govt committee

Victoria’s events sector faces being “stifled” if the state government fails to invest in the necessary infrastructure, the Exhibition and Event Association of Australasia has warned.

During a recent visit to Parliament House in Sydney, EEAA chief executive Joyce DiMascio met with the Parliament of Victoria’s Rural and Regional Inquiry into exports of goods and services.

“Venues like the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Melbourne Showgrounds and Royal Exhibition Buidling may be city-based, but what goes on in these centres has an economic impact across both the urban and regional economy,” she said.

“Companies from regional Victoria exhibit at these venues meeting customers and doing business.

“With a growing number of events now ‘venue bound’ or unable to secure space for exhibitions, conferences and corporate events, Victoria will miss out on crucial business.”

Di Mascio revealed that the committee had been “particularly interested” in the prospect of an international standard events centre for the region Victorian city of Geelong.
