Echo Entertainment Group has appointed former Crowne Melbourne chief executive Greg Hawkins as the new managing director of Sydney casino The Star.

Hawkins is expected to step into the position in September, subject to all the necessary approvals.

“I am delighted Greg will be joining Echo as managing director of The Star,” Echo managing director and chief executive Matt Bekier said.

“Greg brings a wealth of local and regional gaming and entertainment experience that will be invaluable in delivering on the very large growth opportunity in front of us in Sydney.”

Hawkins has 20 years of experience in gaming across Australia, Asia and New Zealand. In addition to his time in the top role at Crowne from 2011 to 2013, he spent five years in Asia – first as chief executive of Altira in Macau, then as president of City of Dreams.

That experience is expected to help The Star capitalise on the opportunities that exist in the Asian VIP and premium mass market, Bekier added.
