Fiji to overhaul Nadi Airport as part of infrastructure plan

Fiji’s Nadi International Airport will undergo a FJ$100 million (AU$58.7m) enhancement over the next two years, with the upgrade part of a broader infrastructure improvement program.

The funding injection was announced at the opening ceremony of the Fijian Tourism Exchange which is currently underway.

Fijian attorney general and minister for tourism Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum told attendees that the works will “position Fiji well for the future”.

The project will include the expansion of the departure and arrivals area, the raising of the roof, the creation of increased floor space and the addition of more retail outlets and leisure spaces.

"The plans have already been drawn up, adding more light and air, and creating a more modern international airport," Sayed-Khaiyum said.

Work will start as soon as a contractor has been appointed and is expected to take between 12 and 18 months.

Sayed-Khaiyum urged FTE delegates to offer their feedback on their experience at Nadi Airport in order to inform the improvement process.

"We encourage and welcome your suggestions.  We know we don't have all the answers to everything, and appreciate your expert advice," he said.

A road expansion program was also confirmed which will widen the road out of Nadi Airport with two extra lanes with work to begin in July.

Road improvements have been a major focus for the Fijian Government over the last two years, with investments of more than FJ$400 million (AU$235m) a year in this area.
