Garuda Indonesia will reinstate services from Brisbane to Jakarta and Denpasar next year as the airline embarks on an aggressive expansion plan to boost its competitive edge.

Marking the end to a five year hiatus, flights will operate six times weekly from Brisbane via Denpasar to Jakarta from August 2013, servicing both the leisure and corporate markets.

Revealing the changes at the Garuda Indonesia Travel Fair in Jakarta, Garuda Indonesia Australia vice president Bagus Siregar explained that the move followed ongoing consumer demand.

“Australian travel to Indonesia is growing every year, with a 20% increase in passenger numbers in the first half of this year on the same period in 2011,” he said. “We have also seen a significant growth in demand in Queensland, particularly in the leisure sector.”

Garuda chief executive Emirsyah Satar said the move formed a part of the airline’s Quantum Leap strategy to boost its competitiveness by 2015, before pointing to further expansion plans.

“Next year we will receive 24 new aircraft … which will allow us to expand our domestic and international network, “ he said.

The announcements follow a recent codeshare agreement with Etihad which has boosted Garuda’s network from 19 international destinations to more than 80 cities in 50 countries.
