Jetstar axes Perth services to Lombok, Brisbane

Jetstar axes Perth services to Lombok, Brisbane

Jetstar has called time on its fledgling Perth-Lombok route just over eight months after its launch, with the carrier to also withdraw its service between Perth and Brisbane.

The network review comes against a tough aviation climate, a spokesperson told The Nibbler.

“The Perth-Brisbane market is heavily geared towards business travel and we’ve seen pretty weak demand for leisure fares on that route at the moment,” he said.

The six times weekly Perth-Brisbane service will end on July 1. Customers booked on Jetstar's Perth-Brisbane services due to fly after June 30 will be offered seats on Qantas flights.

Meanwhile, the four times weekly Lombok service will run until October 17 – 13 months after it was first launched.

The September launch had seen Jetstar become the first Australian carrier to offer direct services to the Indonesian island which neighbours Aussie holiday hot spot Bali.

“With Lombok, despite running famils and doing work to promote destination, we’ve not seen enough demand to pick up the service,” the spokesperson said.

“When we started that market, we thought it was a bit of a growth opportunity and I suppose we just haven’t seen it jump enough. We have not seen enough of an increase in demand.”

Passengers booked on the Lombok service after October 16 will be offered a seat on a Jetstar flight from Perth to Bali's Denpasar or a refund, along with a $50 Jetstar voucher.

Despite the cuts, Jetstar stressed it remains the "largest low fares airline" operating from the Western Australian capital.
