Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort will flick off the lights and pull the plug on all electronic devices this Saturday night as part of the annual Earth Hour Challenge.

Only emergency lighting and candles will be used in the bar, restaurant and reception areas from 8.30pm, and all garden sprinkler systems and electronic devices will be canned from March 22.

Staff are also being encouraged to do their bit for the environment by car pooling, using public transport or walking to work where possible.

Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort has upheld its commitment to environmental sustainability by retaining its EarthCheck Certification for 2013.

The resort has implemented a number of energy efficiency measures in recent years which have seen electricity consumption fall 16.4% in the last year. Gas and water usage has also dropped 17% and 4% respectively in the past 12 months.

Earth Hour will take place from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on March 23. Visit http://www.earthhour.org/ for details.
