A wave of new flights to Queensland is set to boost arrivals to the Sunny state, with the Gold Coast shaping up as the greatest beneficiary.

Queensland’s skies are set to become a lot busier in the coming months, with a number of additional flights in the pipeline. Qantas will resume services from Sydney to the Gold Coast in October, Jetstar will add 200,000 seats to Cairns from September 13, and Etihad Airways will ramp up flights to Brisbane in February 2013.

Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) chief executive John Lee welcomed the recent developments as a “strong endorsement” for Queensland, noting that the additional services would boost arrivals from the Arabian Peninsula and Asia.

Arrivals from Europe, which represent a quarter of total inbound economic value, were also likely to rocket, he added.

Meanwhile, the Mantra Group expects business tourism on the Gold Coast to pick up as a result. “As the Gold Coast continues to grow in conference and business travel, added support from Qantas will provide another option for travellers to access the region,” Mantra Group chief executive Bob East said. “The return of Qantas is excellent news for travellers.”

Gold Coast Tourism chief executive Martin Winter agreed, noting that the extra services would provide “greater incentive” for business travellers to choose the Gold Coast.

“This is an overriding statement of confidence which supports the thinking of the Gold Coast Convention Bureau, the Gold Coast Airport and Qantas, who have watched the business market in the region continue to grow with a keen eye,” he told The Nibbler. “The time is certainly right for the airlines’ return.”
