Australian ‘New Caledonia showcase’ roadshow postponed until later this year

The ‘New Caledonia showcase’ roadshow that was scheduled between the 17th and the 19th of June has now been postponed until later in the year after riots broke out in the country, a spokesperson confirmed.

The roadshow, which was back after a few years’ hiatus, was set to visit Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland this June. The immersive experience was set to include cultural activities and chances to network.

Its announcement coincided with recent enthusiasm from the Australian market, with over 30,719 Aussies venturing to the destination in 2023, an impressive 18.57 per cent increase from pre-pandemic figures.

The increase in travellers led Aircalin to restart its direct Melbourne to Noumea route in December 2023. Direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne were already in place.

Since riots broke out in the country, its national airport – La Tontouta International Airport – has been shut meaning tourists cannot reach the country.

Airline passengers have taken to social media to express their frustration at not receiving refunds for their flights to New Caledonia following the riots.

Taking to a Facebook group set up for travellers to the territory, one user said she didn’t want to lose the $2000 she and her family had invested on flights.

“We want to cancel as it seems unlikely that the situation will resolve sufficiently for us to fly with our three young kids,” she said.

Six people are now reported to have died after protests and violence broke out in the territory ahead of a vote in the French National Assembly on changes to the New Caledonian constitutition.
