CBD location approved for Queenstown convention centre
By admin

Queenstown’s new convention centre looks set to be located in the city’s CBD, as a vote went against the proposed facility at Remarkables Park.

A slim majority approved plans for a $53 million facility at Lakeview at a public meeting although a number of conditions apply, including finding the necessary funding.

The council has agreed to pay $32.5 million with the government possibly willing to stump up a further $10 million.

However, Remarkables Park chief executive and director Alastair Porter called for further discussion on the issue and for “better” plans to be shared with the community.

Information presented to councilors prior to the cote was “inaccurate, out-of-date and therefore misleading”, he said as he urged the council to view the Remarkables site and review its proposal.

Remarkables Park Special Projects general manager Alan Paris highlighted the capacity and flexibility of the proposed convention centre and said the numbers “confirmed without doubt” its ability to service large-scale conferences, even before Phase Two of the project increases its capacity by a further 50%.

Porter will continue to press for the multi-million dollar convention centre which had been slated to open in the second half of 2016.
