IHG signs two Sydney properties, announces major revamp for InterContinental Adelaide
It’s been a very busy week for IHG Hotels & Resorts, to say the least.
The hotel giant has revealed it will bring its boutique luxury brand, Kimpton Hotels & Resorts, to Sydney, build a new hotel in Paramatta and give its Adelaide property a $32 million refurb.
IHG Hotels & Resorts and Pro-invest Group will convert and reposition Sydney’s Primus Hotel as Kimpton Sydney.
Set to open this October with 172 unique design-led rooms and suites, the hotel marks Kimpton’s debut in Australia.
The brand is iconic in the US for its lifestyle programming, which it will bring to Australia through a range of complimentary experiences including a morning kickstart coffee and tea, yoga lessons, bike rentals, and Kimpton’s ‘Social Hour’ – where the brand encourages guests to mingle with locals over complimentary wines in the evening.
Furry, four-legged friends are also welcome, with Kimpton’s pet-friendly approach and dialled-up pet offerings (“If it fits in the elevator, come on in!”).
Leanne Harwood, IHG’s managing director for Australasia, Japan and the Pacific, said: “I can’t tell you how excited we are to finally bring the Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants brand to Australia.
“The Primus Sydney property oozes Kimpton character. As soon as we saw it, we knew it had to wear the Kimpton badge, and we are so glad Pro-invest agrees and has put its full weight behind the brand.”
Harwood said IHG already has 13 open or pipeline hotels across its brands in partnership with Pro-invest.
IHG also announced the signing of InterContinental Parramatta in partnership with Holdmark Property Group.
Scheduled to open in 2025, the new build will be part of a mixed-use development that also includes offices and a ground floor retail precinct.
With plans to deliver a state-of-the-art hotel featuring the brand’s signature InterContinental Life concept, the hotel’s owners are currently in the process of running an architectural competition to find a winning design.
It will feature 200 guestrooms, a restaurant and rooftop bar, a club lounge, pool, gym, a wellness centre and more than 900 square metres of meeting space, all built to “the highest green-rating standard” in line with IHG’s responsible business approach.
While Parramatta may not spring immediately to mind as a luxury destination, it’s regarded as the main commercial centre for the broader Greater Western Sydney Region and is Sydney’s newest CBD, as well as one of Australia’s fastest-growing cities.
The hotel will be located at the junction of two of Parramatta’s most bustling streets – Church and Macquarie Street.
On top of the two new signings, IHG is injecting $32 million into InterContinental Adelaide, marking the property’s first major renovation since opening.
Set to begin this year, the refurbishment will include a redesign of all 367 guestrooms and suites; upgrades to meeting and event spaces; a refreshed restaurant and bar; enhancements to the hotel’s award-winning Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, Shiki; and a new InterContinental Club Lounge space and experience.
It will also mean a facelift for the hotel’s entrance, lobby, hallways and lifts.
South Australian Premier Steven Marshall welcomed the news and said the refurbishment would add a valuable option for South Australia’s tourism, events and business sectors.
“It is a terrific vote of confidence in South Australia – and in our tourism and business credentials,” he said.
“We’ve already seen record occupancy in regional SA, and the highest occupancy in the CBD since the pandemic began, so today’s announcement adds further weight to the importance of continuing to evolve and innovate.
“I want to acknowledge IHG for their investment in Adelaide. It is extremely positive that they see both economic and strategic value in committing to our state moving forward.”
IHG is once again throwing its support behind Travel DAZE, the travel industry’s most thought-provoking conference, in 2021.
The conference will take place from Monday 12 July to Friday 16 July 2021, and it will once again be held virtually and free to attend.
