Motivational speaker arrested after breaching quarantine to speak at WA event

A Victorian-based motivational speaker has been arrested in Fremantle for allegedly breaching a quarantine order to perform in Perth’s south.

WA police said a 49-year-old man, who ABC News has identified as John McMahon, arrived at Perth Airport on 23 June on a flight from Victoria and was directed to self-quarantine for 14-days at suitable premises.

Police allege McMahon was not at the address he gave them when they conducted a self-quarantine check the next day.

He was arrested in Fremantle where he was allegedly planning to hold a motivational speaking event on 24 and 25 June, and had already performed in Rockingham on 23 June.

Police also alleged that McMahon provided false information about where he had been in the 14-day period prior to entering WA, and believe he had visited both NSW and Queensland.

According to his “Motov8” website, McMahon, also known as “the Rev”, specialises in motivational speaking for boys aged 11 to 17 years old.

“In his presentations, he draws upon stories and experiences from his teenage years, being someone who himself made choices that saw his life go completely of track,” the website claims.

“These shared experiences help make a significant connection with his audience.”

McMahon has been charged with two counts of failed to comply with direction and one count of gave false or misleading information.

He is expected to appear in the Perth magistrates court on 23 July.
