NSW venue collapses into lake

Brides-to-be have been left high and dry after a popular wedding venue collapsed into a lake south of Newcastle, just weeks before their big day.

The piers under Milano’s On the Lake appeared to give way on Monday morning leaving the restaurant partially submerged in Lake Macquarie.

The venue has been closed indefinitely, the restaurant’s Facebook page says.

“We are all safe but unfortunately Milano’s is closed until further notice,” the post says.

“We are in the process of contacting all those that have bookings with us.”

Lynne Williams said her stepdaughter had always wanted to get married on the water.

“Now she’s got a wedding in the water,” she said.

“You have to laugh or you’ll cry.”

Her stepdaughter has just eight weeks to find a new wedding venue, said Mrs Williams, but she considers herself lucky given other brides were set to say “I do” at the venue in mere days.

The restaurant has reached out to brides to help find alternate venues, while the NSW Central Coast community rallied on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Other wedding venues offered function rooms, while local residents volunteered to help brides any way they could.
