Suspect charged with deliberately lighting Adelaide hotel fire

Police have charged a woman with arson over a fire at the Ambassadors Hotel, which reportedly caused $250,000 worth of damage.

The fire forced guests to flee the Waymouth Place property in the early hours of last Wednesday morning, with Metropolitan Fire Services on scene containing the blaze to the outside of the building. There were no injuries reported.

A short time later, a 48-year-old Birkenhead woman was located on nearby Gilbert Place and arrested for unrelated matters, South Australian Police said.

Following an investigation, the woman has now been charged with arson and been refused bail, and was due to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.

The incident at the three-star property left its management team disappointed.

“It is huge, it is loss of income, loss of wages for employees and a lot of work. We are going to have to spend a bit of money to get this fixed,” Ambassadors Hotel operations manager Alex Laughton told 9 News.

“It’s just not, not very nice for that to happen.”

The fire reportedly forced guests to be moved to another hotel; however, parts of the Waymouth Place venue were able to reopen shortly after the incident.
