Review: Thai Airways Business class – Sydney to Istanbul: Is it worth the splurge?

Edited by Travel Weekly

Experiencing Thai Airways in pure comfort, onboard the Airbus A350-900 Sydney to Istanbul via Bangkok. Is it worth the splurge?

Pre-Flight and Check-In

Flying TG 472 Sydney – Bangkok at 15:50, you certainly miss all the chaos at Sydney airport, meaning a faster and more efficient check in process. As a Business Class passenger, you’re greeted with a warm smile and ushered to a dedicated SilkAir counter, where there’s no line, and you’re checked in quickly and with no hassle.

As a business class passenger, you’re also invited to the Air New Zealand Lounge, which is shared with Thai Airways. It’s a spacious, quiet and the perfect place to enjoy a champagne or sparking water before your flight.

Boarding and First Impressions

Thai Airways offers priority boarding for Business Class passengers, so you glide through the jet bridge, and as you enter the aircraft, the soft lighting and calm atmosphere set the tone for a relaxing flight.

The cabin itself is stunning – the seats are arranged in a staggered configuration, which provides more privacy. It feels modern and slightly luxurious with gold accents and rich, warm tones. The cabin crew is quick to greet you, offering welcome drinks (a choice of champagne, orange juice, or water) and nuts.

Seat and Comfort

The Business Class seat is a flatbed, with a generous amount of space and adjustable settings for recline, lumbar support, and headrest. It’s not just spacious; it’s comfortable too. the seat transforms into a fully flat bed, and with a thick duvet, pillow and cozy slippers making it it’s surprisingly easy to fall asleep. The seat is laid out diagonally, giving you a good amount of privacy in any position.

There’s a large screen in front of you for in-flight entertainment, and the touchpad controller is intuitive.

Dining

Let me begin by saying this might be my favourite business class meal experience ever! Thai Airways is known for its excellent catering, and Business Class meals are an absolute highlight. The menu offers both Western and Thai options, but of course, I’d recommend trying the Thai dishes – you’re on Thai Airways, after all!

The appetizer may be something like a delicate shrimp salad with a tangy dressing, followed by a hearty main course like fragrant rice with tender chicken or Pad Thai with perfectly cooked prawns. The meals are beautifully presented, and the flavours? Perfectly balanced, with just the right kick of spice, if you’re into that!

Pair your meal with an excellent selection of wines and champagne, or a variety of non-alcoholic beverages, including refreshing juices or herbal teas.

Service

The service onboard is what really stands out. The flight attendants on Thai Airways go above and beyond, with a real sense of genuine hospitality. They’re not just polite, they’re engaging and attentive without being overbearing. They’re always around to offer a refill or ask if you need anything – and they’re quick to respond if you request something. The “royal touch” isn’t just in the name; it’s in the way you’re treated.

Bangkok Royal Orchid Lounge

The lounge is small but sleek – a calm oasis from the buzz of Suvarnabhumi Airport. Located in the International Departures area, it’s a quiet retreat. Think light wood accents, soft lighting, and comfy seating.

While the lounge isn’t massive, the highlight for me is again the food! The choice of food is endless with both hot and cold food on offer. The Pad Thai station might just be my favourite!

Plenty of power outlets, free Wi-Fi, and a few computers for business needs. There’s also a quiet corner for those looking to relax or get some work done and there’s no hassle finding a seat even at peak times.

Final Thoughts

Thai Airways’ Business Class on the Sydney to Istanbul route offers everything a luxurious flight experience has to offer. The seat is spacious and fully flat, the service exceptional, and the food – oh, the food! Plus, the friendly and attentive crew make you feel pampered throughout the journey. If you’re looking for an upscale way to fly to Europe, this is an excellent choice.
