White Bay Cruise Terminal to become first in Southern Hemisphere to offer shore power

Sydney’s White Bay Cruise Terminal is set to become the first port in the Southern Hemisphere to install and supply shore power to the city’s increasing number of visiting cruise ships.

By the end of 2026, the Port Authority of NSW intends to invest nearly $60 million to develop a landside electricity supply for cruise ships at the White Bay Cruise Terminal (WBCT), offset by renewable electricity generation.

Shore power at the Rozelle site allows docked ships to switch from diesel engines to shore-based electricity, significantly reducing emissions, noise and air pollution which has long impacted the local residential community.

The Australian Cruise Association (ACA) has welcomed the announcement saying the initiative supports the state’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

ACA CEO Jill Abel expressed her support for the infrastructure development which was “a significant step forward”, for the cruise sector and a critical part of the industry’s sustainability efforts.

“With 35 ports worldwide now equipped with shore power, we are proud to see Australia embracing this technology, which will not only benefit the environment but also improve the experience for passengers and the surrounding community,” she said.

Globally, 46 per cent of the cruise fleet is currently equipped to connect to shore power, with that number expected to rise to 88 per cent by 2028.

Despite cruise ships accounting for less than 1 per cent of the total global commercial fleet, Abel commended the industry’s leadership in driving cleaner, greener solutions.

White Bay’s implementation of shore power is seen as a model that could be replicated across other Australian ports in the future.
