Where to travel this year based on your Chinese Zodiac
Good news folks: the Chinese New Year is just around the corner!
With this in mind, Kayak has put together a travel guide advising you where to go in 2019 based on your Chinese zodiac.
Feel free to take this as an excuse to spend the rest of your day putting together your ultimate astrological itinerary.
We know we will.
Pig (Born in: 2019, 2007, 1995, 1983, 1971, 1959)
Best months to travel: Any month other than May-June
Recommended travel destinations: Canggu, Stockholm, Sweden, Yucatan Peninsula, Fiji
Summer’s in full swing! While it’s generally good for Pigs to travel frequently, this year your horoscope says you’d be best off postponing your travels a bit.
How about a visit to tropical Fiji in July? It’s dry season and the water is at its clearest. The Fijian archipelago is one of the best places to dive in the world, surrounded by beautiful reefs which are home to around 1,000 species of fish; but on a clear day, a simple snorkel is just as good.
Rat (2008, 1996, 1984, 1972, 1960, 1948):
Best months to travel: November, December
Recommended travel destinations: Morocco, Nepal
Those born in the year of the Rat should plan to travel in the months of November and December. Although December is a popular month for travel around the Christmas holidays, November, while a bit unconventional, is also a great month for a trip somewhere sunny to enjoy some nice weather before the crowds hit.
Morocco is a charming destination, with warm weather lasting into the wintertime. The vibrant city of Essaouira, with its colourful markets and mosques, and Jbel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, are two go-to places to explore over the holidays.
Ox (2009, 1997, 1985, 1973, 1961, 1949):
Best months to travel: March – December
Recommended travel destinations: Sydney, Krabi, Langkawi
Oxen are made to work, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a break.
There are plenty of regional destinations perfect for a trip – Thailand is perfect for sun-seekers, or if you’re looking for somewhere new, try a visit to Langkawi in Malaysia, where luxury resorts nestle amongst thick foliage. Langkawi’s dry season holds court between December and April, so head there before the rain starts to pour.
Tiger (2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950):
Best months to travel: January to March, September to December
Recommended travel destinations: New York, Buenos Aires, San Francisco, French Polynesia
Tigers should plan their travel between September and April. Don’t be afraid to travel long distances! South America might be a new experience, but cosmopolitan Bueno Aires would be a splendid option for travellers of all stripes, especially during the Argentine spring from September to November.
Rabbit (2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951):
Best months to travel: Any month other than June-August
Recommended travel destinations: Singapore, Bangkok, Chiangmai, Venice, Miami
After the hot summer ends, it’s prime time for the Rabbit to go on a trip. Our tip? Go in September, when crowds are fewer, temperatures are a bit milder, and there are cosy chills in the evenings. Singapore’s climate is consistently warm and humid, but September is often somewhat drier than the rest of the year. You can also get lost in the excitement of the Formula One Race!
Dragon (2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, 1952):
Best months to travel: Any month other than July-August
Recommended travel destinations: Istanbul, California
For the energetic Dragon, the Coachella Music Festival in California is a must-go. Not only is it the place to be seen in April, it’s also a good opportunity to tack on a little jaunt to retro party playground Palm Springs.
Snake (2013, 2001, 1989, 1977, 1965, 1953):
Best months to travel: Any month other than September-December
Recommended travel destinations: Bali, Shanghai, Tateyama, Sydney
The tail-end of autumn promises warm, travel-friendly weather, flower blooms, and top-down road trips. Basically, it’s the perfect time to shake off any lingering winter frost and get out of town.
Bali is a year-round destination but for the travellers seeking a peaceful holiday on the Island of Gods, go there in May where you can avoid the crowds and take advantage of quieter beaches as well as lower hotel rates.
Horse (2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966, 1954):
Best months to travel: Any month other than September-December
Recommended travel destinations: Peru, Copenhagen, St Petersburg
Horses can cover great distances, so take advantage and take an unforgettable trip to Peru to see Machu Picchu! There’s a reason Machu Picchu is one of the most-visited tourist destinations in the world.
Set among the clouds, high in the Peruvian mountains, the old Inca city is awe-inspiring. Meanwhile, the Peruvian capital, Lima, is a delicious mix of colonial and South American culture that is also well worth a visit. In midsummer, the weather is dry and the light is perfect. Pencil it in for June?
Sheep (2015, 2003, 1991, 1979, 1967, 1955):
Best months to travel: Any month of the year
Recommended travel destinations: Adelaide, Las Vegas, Dubai, Florida
This year, it’s best to for Sheep to rest and let your mind relax. Don’t stress yourself with holiday planning – how about a trip to Adelaide during the springtime?
Take the chance to escape for a few days and indulge in the wide boulevards, skies, and spaces of South Australia.
Monkey (2016, 2004, 1992, 1980, 1968, 1956):
Best months to travel: Any month other than October-February
Recommended travel destinations: Australia, Bali, Alaska
Australian Monkeys should feel safe – Southwest is the only destination to avoid. Most domestic travel should be within bounds, or if you’re looking for something further flung, tag along with your snake friends and take a trip to Bali.
Rooster (2017, 2005, 1993, 1981, 1969, 1957):
Best months to travel: Any month other than November-December
Recommended travel destinations: Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Darwin
Roosters aren’t migratory birds, so this year is a good chance to plan a weekend city trip or even a staycation. Although there is not a bad time to visit the picturesque city of Melbourne, the autumn period from March to May is particularly nice. Explore Melbourne on foot or on a bike and enjoy picnics, barbeques, and more in any of the beautiful parks!
Dog (2018, 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970, 1958):
Best months to travel: Any month!
Recommended travel destinations: Sri Lanka, Zanzibar, Seychelles, Cape Town, Maldives
As we finally bid goodbye to those January blues, you might start thinking about a weekend away from home. Dogs are particularly lucky this year, so reward yourself with a relaxing trip to the sun, sea, and sands of paradisiacal Zanzibar.
In February you can enjoy warm days while the water is at its clearest, making it a fabulous spot for keen snorkellers and divers.
