Viral video shows hundreds of women breaking COVID-19 restrictions for Zumba class

A Zumba class which saw hundreds of women packed into a room on the Indonesian island of Lombok is being investigated for ignoring health protocols.

A video of the session went viral at the beginning of December showing hundreds of women clad in yellow moving to music while instructors shout at them from a stage.

“We will carry out a police investigation, we will call the organisers and committee because this activity did not have a permit,” Central Lombok Police chief Esty Setyoso Nugroho said, according to Coconuts.

In the video, participants do not appear to be wearing masks and no one is social distancing.

It is being reported the event was organised by Indonesia Sports Women’s Association in Central Lombok and took place at a hall in Central Lombok regent’s office.

“This is extremely counterproductive to what we have been doing thus far to prevent COVID-19 transmission, it is disappointing,” Esty said.

In late September, The Jakarta Post reported on what appears to be the same class, which it said at the time was an event that has been running since 16 September.

The organiser of the class was reportedly hit by a Rp 400,000 which equates to about $38.

The East Lombok regional secretary Juani Taofik told The Jakarta Post he was unaware of the class because it took place inside a building.
