Melbourne fights to retain top place

The Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) has encouraged the public to vote for Melbourne at this year’s World Travel Awards.

As winner of ‘Australasia’s premier business events destination’ title at the 2013 World Travel Awards, the city of Melbourne is automatically in the running to retain its title at this year’s awards.

Karen Bolinger, chief executive officer of MCB, said Melbourne was experiencing its most successful two years with a record number of international association conferences having being held in the city.

“Conference organisers choose Melbourne because it has Australia’s highest concentration of conference facilities located in the city centre and it’s the nation’s knowledge capital, home to preeminent researchers and academics,” Bolinger said.

“This enables conference organisers to create rich content and attract speakers from our rich pool of local intellects to ultimately drive delegate attendance.

“Melbourne will be the first city in the world to host three of the largest and most prestigious health-related conferences in the space of a year – the 22nd World Diabetes Congress held in December 2013, the World Congress of Cardiology in May 2014 and the 20th International AIDS Conference in July – which is proof of the city’s exceptional ability to cater to the meetings and conference market.”

The World Travel Awards were established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry.
