Bali flights resume

Bali flights resume

Jetstar will resume flying to and from Bail, but some Virgin Australia flights will continue to be delayed due to a volcanic ash cloud.

“We’ve determined it’s safe to resume services,” the carrier said in a statement on Thursday.

Virgin Australia flights to Denpasar on Thursday morning are delayed by up to two hours.

Unfavourable winds this week pushed ash from Mount Raung in Indonesia back towards Denpasar, forcing the closure of its airport.

The ash can choke jet engines and destroy bodywork.

Aviation expert Geoff Thomas says winds are now blowing the ash cloud away from Bali, but the threat may not be over.

“This volcano is continuing to erupt,” he told the Seven Network.

“It shows no sign of abating and it really depends on the wind conditions, which way the wind is going to blow this ash, and so we could have the same situation in 24 or 48 hours.”

The airlines have promised regular updates on future scheduled services, with customers advised to check their websites.

Earlier this month, thousands of Australians were stranded for extended periods in Bali due to the threat of the ash cloud.

Virgin and Jetstar flights were severely disrupted and the airlines had to scramble to put on extra services when conditions finally cleared.

Jetstar said the ash cloud was very unpredictable.

“We’ll continue to closely monitor the situation,” it added.

The airline plans to put on additional services to Bali on Thursday from Melbourne, and two additional services from Bali to Brisbane and Perth, to help clear passenger backlogs.

Virgin Australia has scheduled additional services today in order to get affected guests to their intended destination as quickly as possible. Those flights are detailed below.
