Crowne Plaza Terrigal gets taste of Sri Lanka

On Saturday June 10, Crowne Plaza Terrigal hosted celebrity chef, Peter Kuruvita, for ‘Terrigal’s Taste of Sri Lanka’ dining experience at their signature Seasalt Restaurant.

The event celebrated the exotic tastes of Sri Lanka, with Peter taking diners on a journey of the country’s remarkable flavours and aromas inspired by his grandmother’s kitchen in Sri Lanka.

For this special event, Peter joined Seasalt’s resident Executive Chef, Simon Quick, and Executive Sous Chef, Dana Chandler, to collaborate on a Sri Lankan 4-course feast including a Wild Fish Curry and Organic Slow-Roast Goat Kotu, amongst other delicious dishes.

Kuruvita said, “I have a long family history and yearning to promote the wonderful flavours of Sri-Lankan cuisine to the world. My trick has been to plate it in a modern style, while staying true to the traditional flavours.

“My interest in promoting the flavours of Sri Lankan food was realised while working under Neil Perry at Bluewater Grill in the early 1980s. Neil started to put Asian dishes on his menu; until then most good chefs were true to the French-style, which is the influence in which many of us had been trained.

“I grew up surrounded by the goings-on of a traditional Sri Lankan kitchen, a central room in our 360 year old home in Colombo. The flavours and aromas are always with me, and carry me back to my youth in Columbo. Back then, rice and curry was not a special event meal – it was a normal component of our everyday, from breakfast to dinner.

“So when Neil started putting Asian dishes in the limelight, it struck a chord with myself; it was like someone had invited me to share my grandmother’s kitchen with them.”

After three decades as an award-winning chef and restaurateur, Kuruvita has diversified his career to encompass the roles of TV presenter, author, industry speaker and restaurant consultant.

He is well known for his time at Sydney’s iconic Flying Fish Restaurant & Bar which he opened in 2004, and successfully led the kitchen team as Executive Chef for eight years.

In 2008, Kuruvita’s love of the Pacific & passion for seafood led to the opening and continued success of Flying Fish Fiji on Denarau Island, Fiji with a further Flying Fish opening in Fiji on Tokoriki Island in 2014.

His signature style of waterside locations and fresh quality seafood spiced with his cultural flavors can be experienced right here in Noosa, his hometown, at Noosa Beach House within Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort.
