Facial recognition could make passports redundant

New tech could be getting rolled out across Australia’s network of airports, rendering the physical passport useless.

According to AAPthe Immigration Minister Peter Dutton just announced a brand new $22.5 million contract for the next three years, that will see 105 new smart gates landing at Aussie airports, with more to come down the track.

This technology hopes to allow passengers from even more countries to use facial recognition in the immigration process, which should help tackle the seriously irritating queues that stack up, at international airports in particular.

Per AAP, Dutton told Seven Network it will make the processes “much quicker going through the immigration process”.

“The idea of this will be through new technology that is using facial recognition that in some cases if you’ve got a passport that can be read you won’t even have to present the passport,” he told the Seven Network.

Per AAP, it’s estimated 40 million people cleared Australia’s borders last year, with this figure predicted to rise to 50 million by 2020.
