IPW 2024: 960,000 Aussies took the trek to the Land of the Free last year

Travel Weekly is on the ground at the IPW launch in Los Angeles, and goes in search of those states that want us to grace their shores.

Chris Thompson, the president and CEO of Brand USA opened the U.S. Travel Association’s IPW 2024, with a bullish estimation of the year ahead and to a packed global media contingent from over 70 countries.

“There is a clear resurgence in travel enthusiasm with the United States continuing to lead the world in long-haul travel arrivals,” Thompson said.

“And while retiring is bittersweet for me personally, the industry is strong, and Brand USA is well positioned which gives me the confidence to step aside.”

Last year, the country welcomed nearly 67 million visitors who spent $213 billion on travel and tourism-related activities within the United States—representing a 28 per cent increase over the prior year.

Australia is among the top five countries predicted to increase the numbers to hit over one million in 2025.

With over 5700 delegates and a cracking open party at the Los Angeles Exposition Park, with the legendary Diana Ross putting on a stunning show. The partying continued late into the night with busloads of delegates singing along to her classic tunes.

The city of Angels does nothing in half measures and the friendly rivalry among states was evident yesterday, but it was Los Angeles’ time to shine.

The country combined is set to welcome 90 million visitors who will spend $279 billion annually by 2027, with a whopping 78 million visitors are expected to visit the USA by the end of 2024.

Brand USA is jumping in on the lucrative pink dollar too with WorldPride in Washington, DC, in 2025 and for the sports lovers, the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

“Brand USA’s commitment to inviting international travelers to the United States is a key reason why the USA remains the most aspirational travel destination in the world,” Thompson continued.

IPW 2024 is running from 3-7 May at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California.
