Second World Gastronomic Forum gets underway in Peru

The Second World Gastronomic Forum kicked off in Lima today, with over 400 tourism and food experts in attendance including top chefs, food writers, tour operators, academics and producers from around the world.

The experts will reflect upon the most important aspects of an industry which, according to the World Food Travel Association, generates an annual economic impact of 150 billion dollars.

The forum explores the idea of gastronomy as a growing driver for tourism that often remains untapped by destination, the role gastronomy tourism has to play in  maintaining and preserving local tradition and diversity, enhancing local economic development and sustainable practices and harnessing and rewarding authenticity.

Among those participating in the forum are world renowned Peruvian chefs including Gaston Acurio – of Astrid y Gaston, Mitsuharu Tsumura of Maido and Isabel Alvarez, sociologist and restaurateur; as well as Director of the Basque Culinary Centre Joxe Mari Aizega as well as several acclaimed chefs from around the world including Mexico’s Enrique Olvera.

Lima’s choice as a host city of this important global Forum happens at a time in which Peruvian cuisine has earned an international reputation for the variety and quality of its ingredients and techniques, and celebration of local and indigenous ingredients.

Lima’s continues to generate buzz as one of the hottest food cities in the world – it laid claim to four restaurants in the World’s Top 50 Restaurants in 2015 – and many of those top restaurants offer degustation for a fraction of the price you’d pay in Europe.
