Tasmania makes mark in business events

Business Events Tasmania will bring more than 60 prominent academics, leading business professionals and government officials together to celebrate their ongoing efforts in positioning Tasmania as a global business events destination.

The event is a celebration of the first year of the Tasmanian Ambassador Program since its launch in 2016. Business Events Tasmania now has twelve passionate and influential ambassadors as well as the patron The Premier of Tasmania, Will Hodgman, championing the state as a leading business event destination to the world.

The Ambassadors are leaders in their field and represent Tasmania’s key industry sectors including information, communication and technology, science research, Antarctic and Southern Ocean, agriculture and the maritime sector.

Stuart Nettlefold, CEO, Business Events Tasmania said it is their professional achievements, knowledge, expertise and global networks that sets our Ambassadors apart and it is a honour to recognise their valuable contribution to the state.

“The Program helps us to win prestigious global events for the state, including the recently won 22nd International Farm Management World Congress 2019 (Launceston) and the Asian Wave and Tidal Energy Conference 2020 (Hobart),” Nettlefold said.

“Major international and national business events secured by our Ambassadors and Local Hosts include the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles 2022, International Harbour Masters Association Congress 2020, BerryQuest International 2018, and the XXXVI Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, Delegates Meeting and Open Science Conference 2020.

“Business events contributed an estimated $118 million into the state’s visitor economy during the last calendar year. Equally as significant is the contribution these events make to Tasmania’s knowledge economy.

“Business events attract global talent, encourage foreign investment, stimulate trade and facilitate the transfer of knowledge. They also foster innovation, boost productivity, nurture research collaboration and promote cultural exchange for Tasmania,” Nettlefold said.

Four new Ambassadors will also be formally inducted by the Premier, Will Hodgman at the event.

Gretta Pecl, A/Prof & Deputy Associate Dean of Research at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies; Irene Penesis, Deputy Director (Accreditation), Course Coordinator, Master of Engineering A/Prof in Mathematics, National Centre for Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics, Australian Maritime College; David Armstrong, Agricultural Consultant; and Karen Rees, Chair of the Tasmanian Polar Network will be honoured for their individual and collective contributions to Tasmania’s success on the global stage.
