The Big Cheese with Terry Oomens, Director of Sales, Radisson Blu Plaza Sydney

Terry takes some time out of the crazy world of sales to talk bleisure, the buzz of NYC and why we should all be a bit kinder.

The great thing about my job is… The diversity of a hotel business – there’s always something different happening.

The challenge for industry is… Managing distribution channels and the morphing of business and leisure travel.

My greatest achievement is… Living and working in the US – NYC. I was working there for almost three and a half years and the energy, pace and creativty was really exciting.

The biggest thing in MICE this year will be… The ‘opening’ of the new International Convention Centre in Sydney.

I try to relax by… Doing lots of adventure sports.

I don’t understand why... More people aren’t kinder to each other.  It take less energy to be kind so we should all practice kindness more often.

My favourite venue is… Primland, VA, USA (check it out).  Amazing property in a stunning location with fabulous food and wine, and so much to do – golf, hiking, paddle boarding and stargazing in its own observatory.

I’ve always wanted to travel to… Cuba – it’s becoming easier to get to, there is music on every corner and the culinary scene with the family-run Paladares sound fun.

I am scared to death of… Nothing really.

I can’t live without… My wife, good food and wine.

I really wish I had… 12 more hours a day – there is so much to see and do and just not enough hours in the day.

If I could invite four people to a dinner party, they’d be… Spencer Grace, OAM (my rowing coach and Olympics contender), Richard Branson, Conrad Hilton, my wife (Donna).

For anyone starting out in the industry one piece of advice I’d give would be… Be patient, be persistent, you never stop learning.
