Big business for Australia at CIBTM

The Association of Australian Convention Bureaux (AACB) showcased members, Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef, Business Events Sydney, Gold Coast Business Events and Northern Territory Convention Bureau at last week’s 3-day CIBTM event held in Beijing.

Leveraging on a strong “economic opportunity” to grow Australia’s market to lure more international business events, AACB executive director, Andrew Hiebl said CIBTM proved a worthwhile opportunity to build relationships with China and other Asian business events clientele.

“Today, 30% of international business events delegates are from Asia and the growth prospects are greater than any other market,” Hiebl said.

“China’s economy is fast growing and dynamic. CIBTM provides a wealth of opportunities allowing Business Events Australia and Australian convention bureaux to showcase and highlight the many high quality products and experiences found in Australia as a business events destination.”

Tourism Australia continues to pump resources into growing the China market, according to Business Events Australia general manager, Penny Lion, adding that its “relative proximity and excellent travel network, it makes Australia an attractive destination”.

Meanwhile, Cairns and the Great Barrier have reported a significant growth in business from China, attributing the spike to its “natural assets of the Reef and Wet Tropics Rainforest, along with being Australia’s closet gateway city to China, make the region very appealing to the business events market”.

The convention bureaux partnership along with Tourism Australia and industry support is claimed to be integral to helping achieve the nation’s 2020 tourism targets.
