Rotorua seeks five-star hotel to drive events
By admin

The addition of a five star hotel to Rotorua’s accommodation offering would boost the region’s appeal for the business events market, according to Destination Rotorua.

The popular geothermal area of New Zealand’s North Island currently has some luxury lodges, but not large-scale high end properties with the capability to cater to events.

“For us it will be next phase of development if we want to grow our share of different markets,” trade marketing manager Patrick Dault told The Nibbler.

“We’ve got over 15,000 beds so we’ve got a lot of beds, but one segment we haven’t conquered is luxury one.

“We’ve got great lodges and great attractions but when it comes down to conventions, I think having a five star property would be something that would really help.”

Meanwhile, Dault reported a rise in MICE enquiries since the GST-free ruling was announced in April, meaning the cost of holding a business event in New Zealand has been slashed by 15%.

“It’s definitely something we are pushing as a regional tourism organisation, a destination and as a country,” he said. “But we have to give it time to get some traction and also for us to make sure that we are leveraging that.”
