Holiday Inn to debut in Cairns

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has signed a management agreement with Taisei Kanko Australia to rebrand the Mercure Cairns Harbourside to a Holiday Inn from September.

The 173-room Holiday Inn Cairns Harbourside will undergo a refurbishment before its debut, and marks the eleventh property for brand in Australia.

Situated at the northern end of The Esplanade in Cairns, the hotel is expected to largely cater to leisure travellers keen to visit the Great Barrier Reef, but also attract corporate visitors due to its proximity to Cairns CBD and in-house facilities including a 24-hour business centre.

“Domestic travel continues to pick up and as the gateway to one of the world’s top tourist attractions Cairns is a key city for us in Australia,” Karin Sheppard, chief operating officer, Australasia, Japan and Korea & Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA) Franchising, IHG said.

The move is part of an ongoing IHG expansion in Australia, after announcing it plans to open a Crowne Plaza in Tasmania and bring its five-star brand, InterContinental, to Perth.

The next Holiday Inn to open will be in Sydney’s North Ryde in 2016.
