While luring the family market to Fiji’s shores remain a key focus for the country’s growth, adventure and sport tourism now place high on the ranks.

The shift in developing the niche market comes shortly after Uprising Beach Resort announced it would spend multi-millions of Fijian dollars to build an international sized training field, a high performance sports gym, a multipurpose court, sprint track, 25m lap pool, meeting and physio rooms as well as expanding its property size to include 12 new guest rooms.

According to the resort, 15% of its total current visitation is derived from sports tourism, with owners hoping to grow this segment further. The gym alone will cost the resort about FJ$2 million with the entire development earmarked for completion next year.

“Uprising has identified a need for better facilities outside of the major urban areas in order to provide more options for touring international teams as well as local teams wanting a “one stop shop” for all their teams sporting needs,” Uprising Beach Resort owner, Rene Munch said.

The move comes as Fiji repositions itself as both family friendly but also is touting its capabilities as an adventure and sports destination.

“The organic growth from these sporting events illustrates the massive potential that exists for increasing visitor arrivals, as sports tourism attracts large groups. We are diligently working on capturing this market,” Tourism Fiji, executive chairman and acting ceo, Truman Bradley said.
