Planners get a virtual trip to Darwin

New virtual reality facilities will enable Darwin Convention Centre to introduce event planners to its facilities without them having to visit the Northern Territory.

The new Samsung VR headsets arrived this week and will be used at client visits and trade shows. They are currently being used at the ConveNTions Walkabout roadshow which is making its way across Australia. It visited Adelaide on Tuesday, arrived in Sydney on Wednesday and will finish up in Melbourne on Thursday.

The arrival of the headsets builds on the launch of 360 degree videos on the Darwin Convention Centre website “a couple of months ago”, according to general manager Janet Hamilton.

“It’ll be interesting to see how it goes,” she told The Nibbler. “We’re keen to show everyone how beautiful, tropical and modern our centre is – it’s something that’s hard to get across in stills.”

The new technology is so important for the centre because of Darwin’s location, often perceived as remote.

“You can’t just nip there for a site inspection like you might do in Sydney or Melbourne,” Hamilton said.

Hotels and operators are increasingly turning to virtual reality technology to sell their products with VR widely touted as the next major digital platform.
