Shakira and J. Lo light up Super Bowl halftime show

With a performance packed with Latina and Arabic influences, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez drew more attention during Monday’s US Super Bowl than the big game itself.

Praise for Super Bowl LIV’s incredible half time show has been showered on headline acts Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, after their no-nonsense performance affirming Latin and Middle Eastern pride.

The show delivered hip-shaking choreography, a medley of infectious hits from both artists’ repertoire – including Lopez’s “Jenny From the Block” and Shakira’s “Wherever, Wherever” – and a traditional Arabic gesture unleashed by Shakira: the zaghrouta.

Furthermore, Monday’s performance also arguably served as a political commentary on the American border crisis when Lopez’s 11-year-old daughter, Emme, appeared with a children’s choir to sing “Born in the USA” and “Let’s Get Loud” alongside her mother.

The children’s choir at one point appeared in cage-like structures, which viewers saw as a subtle, yet powerful border crisis statement.
