The Big Cheese with Andrew Davidson of InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa

InterContinental’s area general manager South Pacific takes some time out of his day to day to talk torch bearing, the joys of tighter budgets and why Fiji is such a great MICE destination.

The great thing about my job is… when we get the four pillars of our business in sync – repeat guests with great memories, excellent financial results, great team satisfaction, prosperous owner relations.

The challenge for industry is… growing costs, and declining disposable income – when peoples budgets have to be tightened the vacation plan is the first thing to be cancelled.

My greatest achievement is… finding someone to share my life with, as well as my team at the InterContinental Johannesburg achieving the highest accolade for a franchise hotel in 2014 – Torch Bearer Award. Well done team!

The biggest thing in MICE this year will be… coming to experience Fiji. It’s a great destination with excellent people who will genuinely take care of your conference / banquet details. The warmth of Fijian people is definitely a tangible asset to our business.

I try to relax by… spending time in my garden with my wife and the family pets.

I don’t understand why… some people can be so negative at times.

My favourite venue is… a stunning restaurant with great food, great ambiance, great view and on trend.

I’ve always wanted to travel to… America – but I don’t like flying long distance.

I am scared to death of… flying long distances and flying any distance in a small plane.

I can’t live without… sadly, my laptop. Keeps me connected.

I really wish I had… taken more time with family and friends.

If I could invite four people to a dinner party, they’d be… friends and family – I spend so little time with them.

For anyone starting out in the industry one piece of advice I’d give would be… work hard and put in the time – improve your knowledge.

I find nowadays the latest generation joining the industry are not prepared for what lies ahead and then either expect to be general managers overnight or just give up one year later – because this is hard work.

Don’t think it’s all glitz and glamour front of house. There are lots of hard working people behind the scenes keeping that guest experience where it needs to be.
