The Big Cheese with Crowne Plaza Sydney Coogee Beach’s Gareth Long

This week, we caught up with Gareth Long, area general manager at Crowne Plaza Sydney Coogee Beach, who wishes he met his wife 10 years earlier. Awww.

The great thing about my job is…

The diversity. Every single day is different. I also really enjoy having an impact on someone’s career and love nothing more than a good, honest career conversation.

The challenge for the industry is…

Attracting and retaining talent. It is a war out there, and finding amazing people – the foundation of any great hotel experience – is really competitive. We are constantly challenging the perceptions of what it is to work in hotels/hospitality to make sure people understand it is a vibrant, flexible and rewarding career path.

My greatest achievement is…

Completing my first opening of a brand new hotel in Amritsar, India.

The biggest thing in MICE this year will be…

The relaunch of the stunning new facilities at Crowne Plaza Sydney Coogee Beach!

I try to relax by…

Weekends away with my wife.

I don’t understand why…

Don’t use their indicators when driving. It drives me crazy!

My favourite venue/destination is…

The Maldives.

I’ve always wanted to travel to…

Jordan to see Petra.

I am scared to death of…

The All Blacks losing.

I can’t live without…

My car.

I really wish I had…

Met my wife 10 years earlier.

If I could invite four people to a dinner party, they’d be…

Eddie Vedder, Daniel Day Lewis, Richie McCaw, and the Queen.

For anyone starting out in the industry, one piece of advice I’d give would be…

Spend some time understanding what your real purpose is. Why do you do what you do? If you understand this, you know where to look when the going gets tough.
