“Business as usual” in Christchurch

Although shaken by the latest earthquake to rock the city, Christchurch remains undisrupted with local businesses keen to get the word out that it is business as usual.

Christchurch and Canterbury Convention Bureau (CCCB) manager Caroline Blanchfield said that the aftershock had come as a surprise, it was nonetheless an “expected event” as part of the declining sequence of aftershocks from the devastating 2011 event.

“All our city remains open, our tourism attractions are all open, and it is situation normal in Christchurch apart from one small area of red zoned land that happened to shear off (the edge of a small section of cliffs) which made things look worse than they were,” she said.

The 2011 earthquake which destroyed vast swathes of the city, was a catalyst for the city’s redevelopment, with many of the buildings erected in places of those destroyed built using earthquake-resistant building technology.

Blanchfield was keen to drive the message home that the CCCB will still be in attendance at the Asia-Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expo (AIME) next month – its first time at the show since before the 2011 quake.

It will be showcasing the city’s dynamic transformation, with the new convention centre and more hotels due to open in the next few years.
