MCB snaps up prestigious award

Melbourne Convention Bureau is celebrating as chief executive Karen Bolinger was presented the prestigious Melbourne Award for Contribution to a Profile by a Corporation by Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle at a gala dinner at the weekend.

The award acts as recognition of the positive impact the conference sector has had on raising the profile of Melbourne internationally, according to Bolinger.

“The success of these conferences was the result of a true partnership between the city, state and international associations,” she said. “Importantly, they also left legacies, such as policy and legislative change and health and social improvements meaning these conferences are still having an impact today.”

Melbourne has hosted five of the world’s largest health conferences so far this year. These have included the World Diabetes Congress, World Cardiology Congress, International Congress of the World Federation of Hemophilia, 20th International AIDS Conference and World Cancer Congress, all of which have attracted a combined total of almost 35,000 experts in their field to Melbourne, contributing $204 million to the economy.

MCB commended the other finalists in the category for raising Melbourne’s profile on the world stage. These included Tennis Australia for the Australian Open, GM Holden’s Australia Design Centre and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.

It is the second major award for MCB in two weeks, with Melbourne also named Australia’s Leading Meetings and Conference Destination for the third consecutive year at the World Travel Awards in Hong Kong on October 30.
