The Big Cheese with Mathew Haynes of The Star Sydney

The Star’s event centre technical manager takes some time to talk fulfilling client expectations, technical advances and road rage.

The great thing about my job is… the diversity of different events ranging from dinners, concerts, exhibitions to live broadcast events, and, our very talented team that pull it all together.

The challenge for industry is…  smaller budgets with compressed lead times, which at times can make it more challenging  to achieve clients expectations.

My greatest achievement is… my two beautiful children.

The biggest thing in MICE this year will be… further advancement of the technical world, which will ensure more immersive, unique event experiences are delivered.

I try to relax by… going to the gym before work every day.

I don’t understand why… there is so much road rage in Sydney.

My favourite venue is… Royal Albert Hall in London, I went to see Cirque Du Soleil back in 2009 and would love to go back there one day.

I’ve always wanted to travel to… America with my two boys, to drive Route 66.

I am scared to death of… a world where my children grow up with terrorism and violence.

I can’t live without… Friday morning bacon and egg rolls!

I really wish I had… my own island.

If I could invite four people to a dinner party, they’d be… Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Al Gore and George Clooney.

For anyone starting out in the industry one piece of advice I’d give would be… You need to be prepared to work hard in order to achieve great things – nothing comes easy! And it’s critical to keep up to date with the latest trends.
