5 reasons why Australia’s winter is hot stuff

Winter is coming, and as we farewell tank tops and summer days, we count down the best reasons why Australia is still hot in the cooler season.
Outdoor Agencies’ Ben Salon has put together the top 5 reasons why Australia’s outdoor scene only gets better come the chilly time of year.
“As Australian’s, we are all guilty of chasing the sun at one stage or another,” he said.
“We run from winter, terrified of temperatures below 20 degrees and will travel across the world to avoid wearing long pants and covered footwear outside of business hours.”
Here are 5 simple reasons you need to try exploring Australia throughout winter.
1. Crowds be gone
The first benefit of travelling in the chillier months is the crowds. Have you ever visited Byron Bay in summer? How about Noosa, or Margaret River?
As beautiful as these places are, they become overrun with tourists during the summer period. Winter, on the other hand, is a different story. Crowds stay away, accommodation is cheaper and the ocean is still warm. Please and thank you.
2. Hidden health wins
The health benefits of being outdoors in winter are wide ranging. UV levels are lower so sunburn isn’t as big an issue – although knowing our sun, a bit of lotion is always necessary!
There’s also a theory that suggests your basal metabolic rate is lower in winter, which means your burn more calories while you’re resting. That’s a win in anyone’s language.
3. So cool it’s hot
Cooler temperatures mean you can make better use of daylight hours.
Sure, there might be an hour or two less daylight, but the fact that it’s not 35 degrees outside makes hiking, camping and kicking back in the warm winter sun a whole lot more pleasant. The lower temps also mean less irritating insects like mosquitoes and flys!
4. Wildlife warrior
Cooler weather means slightly cooler water temperatures, which in turn attracts a greater abundance of marine life. Snorkelling, diving and fishing are all best enjoyed through the middle of the year.
5. Burn baby burn
If you’re camping in winter, another bonus is that for the most part, there will be no fire bans! This opens you up to cooking on an open flame which is one of life’s great joys.
Toasting marshmallows, roasting potatoes and sizzling snags are just some of the culinary treats awaiting the winter camper.
